Started amateur career as a shortstop (1st string) with Winston-Salem Pond Giants in 1961 as a High School Junior.


 

Named to 1st Annual Negro All City/County Football team in 1962.

Players included Hall ofFamers Roscoe Pouncy (Atkins), Milton" Pink Nose" Wright, Jerome" Heart Break" Watson, Hilliard" Spunky" Hill, Eugene Campbell (Carver) and Arthur" Goot" Childs (Columbia Height).


 

Captain of Varsity Football,and Baseball teams. (1962) Named All City/County and All District Football Teams. (1962)


Selected to play in the N. C. SHRINE BOWL (halfback 1962).


 

1959-1962 Johnson played with some outstanding Hall ofFamers Carl "Moose" Eller (N.F.L. Hall of Fame), J.B. Sharp (University Of Minnesota), James" Big" Price (North Carolina College), Ike Hill (Chicago Bears) and Albert "T - ball" Conners (NCCD).
